Produce Recalls Hit Restaurants

Credit: AP Online
DURHAM, N.C. -

With more recalls hitting restaurants some owners are taking extra precautions.

Fresh jalapeno peppers and avocados distributed in North Carolina have tested positive for salmonella, while tomatoes are now safe to eat.

The jalapeno peppers came from a Texas supplier and were distributed to 25 counties across the state, according to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.

"There's always a recall on something here and there, more so in the summer because of produce, but I would say more the past five years have we seen serious issues," said Danielle Rios, a Durham restaurant owner.

Danielle Rios is meticulous about the cleanliness of her restaurants; she owns two in Durham, Italian restaurant, Tosca and Mexican restaurant, Blue Corn café. She buys locally when she can and checks every piece of produce that comes through the door.

"We can't sustain our volume all the time from local growers," she said. "We don't buy anything frozen, so it's important that we do stay up on top of everything."

But the increase she's seen in recalls over the past five years has her concerned about regulations.

"It's so much lately that I don't even know anymore," said Rios "At the end of the recall they told us what was going on but via the recall we had no idea, so I think it does send off a panic."

It's a concern being echoed by consumers.

"I think we really need some leadership that's going to help solve some of those problems and track where our food comes from, they should be able to track where our food comes from quite rapidly so we don't have a full blown epidemic," said John Sullivan, a Durham resident.

But in the end Rios said it's ultimately up to the consumer to be responsible for what they eat.

"You can't trust everywhere you're walking into, the establishment, it's important to check your sanitation grade, ask questions, if you went to the doctor you are your own consumer you would ask questions," she said.

State Health Officials said that these latest recalls are examples of why North Carolina needs stricter regulations on out-of-state produce.

Here’s another reason to not eat or use any animal products. (go vegan) Salmonella comes from only animal sources...usually poultry and eggs.  And, the long-term usage of antibiotics in both the poultry and beef industries may have created a strain of salmonella which is potentially resistant to antibiotics. OK, I’m veg too, but read the article.  This isn’t tainted meat.  We’re talking about salmonella on our AVOCADOS and JALAPENOS. Yes, fertilizer may be the obvious culprit, but we need to think broader than just blaming the meat industry when it comes to every food industry debacle.  Fear will not be (and cannot be) what advocates great change in sustaining a healthy nation.

If anything, I think this is a tremendous message to eat locally and support local sustainable farms instead of food from who-knows-where at your local cruddy chain.  Then, if you have any issues, you know exactly where to look for answers.  And everyone benefits from local organic, no matter what diet you consume.
